The short answer
Yes — once a year. Gas fireplaces don't build soot like wood, but they need annual service: burner and pilot cleaning, glass and gasket check, blower cleaning, correct log placement, a venting inspection, and a carbon-monoxide test. Skipping it is how you end up with ghost soot on the logs, a permanently fogged glass panel, lazy yellow flames — or CO drifting into the room.
What actually gets dirty in a gas unit
Dust and pet hair burn onto the burner ports, spiders nest in pilot tubing over summer, the blower cakes with dust, and combustion byproducts deposit a white mineral film on the glass. Logs get bumped out of position by cleaning or curious kids — and misplaced logs disrupt flame patterns enough to soot and to burn incompletely.
The carbon-monoxide reason
This is the real point of annual service. A blocked or corroded vent, a failing heat exchanger on an insert, or incomplete combustion from dirty burners can spill CO into the living space — invisible and odorless. The service visit ends with a venting inspection and a CO reading at the unit, which is not something a glass-cleaning wipe-down covers.

Yes — with a cream gas-fireplace glass cleaner, unit cold, glass removed per the manual. But if the film returns within days, that's a combustion problem telling on itself: book service rather than cleaning harder.
Do ventless (vent-free) logs need service?
More than vented units, not less — they burn room air and exhaust into the room, so burner cleanliness and the oxygen-depletion sensor are safety-critical. Annual service, no exceptions.
Why does my gas fireplace smell?
