Mason repointing a brick wall with a trowel

Masonry fails from the joints out. Mortar is designed to be the sacrificial element — softer than the brick, it weathers first, and once joints open up, water gets behind the face of the brick, freezes, and pops it apart. That flaking, crumbling face is called spalling, and it spreads fast once it starts.

Summit Chimney does real repointing: grinding failed joints to proper depth, repacking them with mortar matched to the original in color and hardness, and replacing individually spalled bricks with matched units. We finish with a breathable waterproofing treatment so the freeze-thaw cycle that caused the damage doesn't just start over.

Customer reviews

Homeowners who booked masonry repair

google

“We had water stains on the ceiling next to the fireplace and two other companies quoted us a full rebuild without even getting on the roof. Summit's tech ran a camera, found it was just failed flashing and a cracked crown, and fixed both for a fraction of those quotes. Honest diagnosis, photos of everything, and no scare tactics. That's rare in this business.”

“Booked the sweep and inspection special online in about a minute. They confirmed by text within the hour, showed up at the start of the window, and finished in about 90 minutes. My gas fireplace also had a pilot light issue and the tech sorted it in the same visit. Fair, fast, and genuinely tidy — I would not hesitate to use them again.”

“We bought an older home and had Summit do a Level 2 camera inspection before our first fire. Thorough is an understatement — full video of the flue, a written report with photos, and a clear list of what actually needed attention versus what could wait. No pressure to do everything at once. The repairs we did book came in at the flat price quoted.”

FAQ

Masonry Repair questions

What is tuckpointing, exactly?

Grinding deteriorated mortar joints out to a sound depth and repacking them with fresh mortar. Done properly — right depth, matched mortar — it restores both the structure and the look of the chimney.

How long does repointing last?

Done right, 25 to 30 years. Done as a smear-over-the-top cosmetic job — which is common — a few winters. Depth and mortar match are what separate the two, and our photos show you both.

Can you match my existing brick and mortar?

Almost always. We match brick by size, color range, and texture, and tint mortar to blend with the weathered original, not the day-one color.

When does masonry damage become structural?

When whole courses loosen, the stack leans, or cracks run through bricks rather than joints. At that point you're in rebuild territory — and we'll show you the photos and say so honestly.
